Jeannie C Riley-Harper Valley PTA
Girl power late sixties style is our featured attraction tonight.
We head back to the song synonymous with Jeannie C Riley, a tribute to small town hypocrisy and all it’s nasty tendencies. A rather sensational song for its times, the Tom T. Hall composition reflected a new era for women, who wouldn’t be pigeon holed into the roles that society had previously laid out for them.
Well before Helen Reddy declared their independence, Riley stepped up to the microphone and said that maybe things were going to change, at least in a little town called Harper Valley
Riley belts out the inconsistencies of Harper Valley with rapid fire glee, laying to waste the busy body making body known as the PTA.
Numerous versions have come down the road, but Jeannie C Riley still holds the title. Hers
went to number one on both the pop and country charts.
It's one of those crossover songs that took on a life of its own and provided Riley with her biggest hit and helped move hall on from struggling songwriter to Nashville icon.
