Two sides to every story!

Last week in the rush to declare that the job boom was on in Prince Rupert, the Daily News featured a front page story on the troubles of a local store in finding staff.

In last Monday’s Daily News, the paper featured the difficulties that the RONA store in Cow Bay was having, spurred on they said by the lucrative jobs seemingly coming from the Port of Prince Rupert. The story recounted how the store had lost five employees in short order, three of them in one day. The article more or less suggesting that the problems in staffing revolved around the container terminal and the jobs that it may or may not create in short order.

Of course, since it was a story about a booming economy, little thought was given to the five employees who departed and what they might have had to say about the whole issue. This is too bad, because if you come to think about it losing five employees in short order and three in one day, probably has a story behind it somewhere. It was something this blog thought might be true when we first heard of the “job boom” story and some anecdotal confirmation appeared on the scene yesterday in the paper to help back up that theory.

Part of that story came out in the letters to the editor page of the Daily News.

A former employee penned a response to the article and suggests that the claims of a company finding it hard to compete with the high paying jobs of the port may not be quite as correct as the article would lead one to believe. Reading between the lines of the letter, it would appear that perhaps there were some underlying management/staff issues at that store, which may have contributed to the sudden exodus, port jobs or not.

It doesn’t fit in well with the premise that things are so good here now that the jobs are going wanting, but in the end there’s a need to look a little further into a story than just the optics being spun by a company that suddenly finds a number of employees walking away from their jobs.

NOT ALL THE BLAME LIES ON PORT JOBS

To the editor,

I am writing in response to the article on Monday’s front page regarding Rona Building Centre.

As one of the employees mentioned I take great exception to the blame the manager put on the port (wages).

Indeed there has been very few employees leaving for the port, and in fact by placing blame on a wage issue, the real issues for losing staff are being ignored.

Well wages are certainly a consideration, some people are happy to be working full time, year round, with a wage that includes benefits. Money isn’t everything, and if your staff is regularly leaving you, the company needs to look within themselves for the problems, and stop blaming the “economy.”

There are just as many internal issues that force employees to leave, not just the wages.
