Coast Tsimshian Academy employees granted BCGEU application

The BCGEU website has outlined the latest developments in the labour troubles at the Lax Kw'alaams Academy, as local employees at the Academy have had their application for membership in the provincial union approved.

The order issued on July 19th, certified the BCGEU as the employees bargaining agent in their dispute with Lax Kw'alaams management. Including teachers, teaching assistants and other staff members there are now 40-43 members within the Bargaining unit.

The board also ruled in the union's favour over the position of vice-principal, advising that the position belongs in the bargaining unit as proposed by the BCGEU.

The union will now get to work negotiating a first contract for the employees with the Independent school, in addition to those negotiations, the BCGEU will continue to seek a resolution over the dismissal of two Academy employees including the vice principal.

Some of the background on the dispute can be found from our archives.
