The Matanuska prepares for her return

A familiar sight is soon to be seen in Prince Rupert harbour again.
.
While BC Ferries has been busy introducing new ferries to the Northern routes, the Alaska Marine Highway System has been working out the final preparations to re-introduce the 46 year old ferry The Matanuska to service on the Prince Rupert - Ketchikan run.

On Thursday the AMHS announced that after a nine month refit and overhaul at a shipyard in Oregon, The Matanuska is is scheduled to return to active duty with its first sailing scheduled for Tuesday from Ketchikan to Prince Rupert.
Among the work done on the vessel was the introduction of new evacuation system and the installation of an automated testing system in the ship's engine room.

The vessel returns just in time for the hectic summer sailing season, which sees a large number of travellers pass through Prince Rupert to and from Alaska.
