BC Ferries has decided on the names they will give their Northern route vessels, the Ferry Corporation announced today that the replacement name for MV Sonia will be Northern Adventure.
She takes on that new name when she sets sail in Northern waters next spring. The Northern Adventure (nee Sonia) will take up duties on the service once provided by the Queen of the North.
Then, as the Ferry Corporation takes delivery of the currently under construction vessel to replace the Queen of Prince Rupert, it will be named Northern Expedition. It is anticipated that the vessel will arrive in Canada, from the German shipyard in the spring of 2009.
It marks a departure from old Queen of series, and as the BC Ferries press release puts it: "Northern Adventure and Northern Expedition capture that uniqueness and our commitment to showcase the tremendous opportunities for tourism and economic development that northern British Columbia has to offer."
