At times, there apparently is no such thing as free news!

Perhaps the carriers are rebelling, that free home delivery of the Daily News on Wednesdays and Fridays is a turning into a bit of a hit and miss affair, with the misses starting to outnumber the hits by a growing number.

Overheard while in line on a recent Friday evening at Eddies News, was a lady purchasing a copy of the Friday Daily News, because her carrier says he doesn’t have enough copies provided on his route to deliver to every house”, she apparently likes to look over the flyers before shopping on Saturdays. Thus, she was more than willing to pay for a newspaper that she should be getting at home for free. It all makes you wonder what kind of Public Relations this is providing for the Daily News and their experiment in home delivery.

Now maybe the paper isn’t providing enough copies, or perhaps the carrier just doesn’t feel like hauling all those papers around the neighborhood on Wednesdays and Fridays, but regardless it would seem that judging by complaints heard around town, in some parts of the city there appears to be a bit of a distribution problem.

Even more of concern for the paper if you think about it, could be the reaction from the major advertisers with the Daily News. Once the major grocery stores figure out that their flyers aren’t making it to as many households as possible, they may wonder why they’re using the Daily News to deliver them in the first place.

As if the home delivery quandary isn’t enough, now it seems the free access to the Daily News website on Wednesday and Fridays may be at risk or at least experiencing problems of its own. This Friday’s paper never made it to the posting phase, with only the lead stories of Thursday listed on the site. (Not good news for your faithful scribe at the Podunk here, who enjoys those free access days for purely Podunkian archival purposes!)

The pay for three days, get two free project was an interesting idea, but judging by the troubles that they seem to be having of late, one wonders if it’s working as planned..

Reliability is a key to reputation. If you get into the habit of not getting the paper, you probably won’t in the end miss it after awhile and if you’re paying for something that others might be getting for free, you probably will question if you need or even want the paper in the first place.

In some cases, the Daily News may find that absence doesn’t actually make the heart grow fonder.
