Phil Collins-In the Air tonight

Here at the music club viewing booth, we’ve been in kind of an eighties groove the last couple of weeks, caused by numerous viewings of old episodes of Miami Vice, the inventive television program that meshed crime drama with a rock soundtrack.

It was the era of the music video, and during the high stakes crime solving of Crockett and Tubbs pulsed a pretty solid soundtrack.

No one benefited more from the exposure of Michael Mann’s highly touted experiment than Phil Collins, who found his music as one of the main themes of many an escapade from Miami’s two most famous detectives.

Collins, who was splitting his time between Genesis and his solo projects became a fixture in the background of the show, his music symbolizing the MTV meets cop format of the show. The network television program and the debut of the MTV format proved to be the perfect partners to showcase many of the stars of that era and none made the best of the situation better than Collins.

His Face Value album which launched his solo career came out in 1981, a few years before Vice hit its heights on the television sets of the continent. Yet his signature song off that album and our music pick tonight, In the air tonight, played a pivotal role in the pilot episode of the program and while more than able to stand on its own, will probably will forever be associated with the show.

Come along as we ride along with Sonny and Rico, with Phil pounding out the beats, out to solve crime, dress well and listen to some iconic eighties music.
