Nisga'a nation selects Mitchell Stevens as new President

The results have been released from Thursday's balloting for the Presidency of the Nisga Lisims government and with 299 of the votes Mitchell Stevens, was declared the winner, defeating eight other challengers for the position.

Mitchell's victory was by the narrowest of margins, as he received but eight votes more than the second place finisher Kevin McKay who tallied 291 votes, Mckay had served as interim president since the passing of former leader Nelson Leeson, Herbert Morven rounded out the top three finishers with a vote total of 235.

The remainder of the vote count went as follows: Eric Nyce 125 votes, Harry Nyce 124 votes, Frances Stanley 119 votes, Joseph Gosnell Jr. 108 votes, Paul Mercer 105 votes, and Arthur Azak 53 votes.

 Mr. Stevens will finish out the remaining two years of the former president's term, which will come to an end in the fall of 2012. He will move on to the Presidency after having served as a village councillor at Laxgalts'ap (Greenville) in the Nass.
