Hey we had an earthquake! Five of them actually.

About 2:39 this morning (Saturday, January 5) the first of what would be five earthquakes rumbled along the southern end of the Queen Charlotte Islands. The initial one came in at 5.6 followed by two stronger temblors at 3:01 and 3:45 which were both listed as 6.5 on the Richter scale.
.
Four o'clock brought a smaller quake in the area of 5.0 and a 4.2 aftershock was reported at 9:16 this morning.

The quakes were centred south of the Charlottes about 330 kms south of Prince Rupert, which probably accounts for why there was no noticeable movement along the North Coast.

There so far have been no reports of damage from the Charlottes or the Central Coast or south to Port Hardy, which are the areas most likely that would have felt the most rolling during the overnight period.
.
Most of the reports that were provided to Natural Resources Canada came from the Bella Bella area which seems to have felt the shaking the most.
.
Aftershocks of reduced intensity are expected for the next little while in that area. No damage was reported and no tsunami warnings were activated due to the spurt of quakes.
