Seeing it in the cold light of day, after protesters had been appeased and trails of scurrilous e-mail deleted, organizers perhaps realized it had not been a brilliant idea. The Prince Rupert, B.C., division of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had planned to hold a fundraiser by encouraging supporters to boil live crabs alive before eating them. Since the crab was at last count an animal, and since boiling a creature alive might be counted as cruel even if there was some dispute over how much pain it felt, it was not what public-relations practitioners would call a great fit.

Of course, the SPCA could have taken a different tack: We will boil this crab alive unless you donate $20. But you couldn't be sure as the day wore on that basic instincts wouldn't kick in. "Um, how about I keep the $20 in my pocket and give it to the cause after we've had a nice dinner with, say, butter or pesto and lemon juice."

The crab boil has been called off. Whether the person who dreamed up the scheme will be in hot water is not known.
