The Last stand of the Neo Cons?

There’s an interesting take on the current conflagration between Israel and Hezbollah in the latest dispatch from the Salon website.

Sidney Blumenthal writes that instead of working towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict that seems to wiping southern Lebanon off the face of the earth, that some White House insiders are actually providing information destined to not only extend the current fighting, but to dramatically escalate things, bringing more combatants out onto the field in the form of Syria and Iran.

While it seems a bit fanciful (if not steeped in hues of conspiracy) that this might be the ultimate plan, it’s never a black and white world when it comes to the players of the Middle East and American influence in the region.

The theory being put forward by Blumenthal is that it’s yet one more grasp of the neo-cons in the Bush Administration to regain control of the agenda in the final stages of the Bush presidency.

Blumenthal paints a rather bleak picture for the prospect of peace in that region anytime soon and seems to have the career of Condi Rice destined for history’s trash can as well. Rice in Blumenthal’s opinion is merely a pawn who is being used and tossed aside as the neo cons march again to the Presidential table.

It’s worth a read, but don’t be looking for a positive ending by the time you finish digesting this theory. For those that hate Bush its confirmation of more of their fears, for those that think he’s the greatest it’s just one more symbol of the leftist and liberal agenda in America run amok

For the rest of us, it’s just another indication that it’s time to hide our heads under the covers again for awhile.
