The Eagles--Hotel California
We peek into the music history books for our selection tonight, featuring one of California's best exports in a musical vein.
On May 4, 1977, The Eagles signature song Hotel California reached number one on the bible of music chartology Billboard. It provides the lasting impression of the land of sun, surf and sound.
The song, with its gentle opening provided the template of the Southern California sound of the mid seventies, which became one of the most prolific and prosperous of eras for popular music.
From the understated opening of the song, the momentum builds until the crashing guitars and thumping drum beats celebrate the shimmering lights, mission bells and a place that could be heaven or hell.
Hotel California came out when the Eagles were at their peak of success and innovation, a very different sound than what had been coming out of the radios of the world in the early to mid seventies and provided some of the main DNA of California's music industry of the day.
The album of the same name, provided the transition for the band from southern California country rockers to pop music icons, developing a trademark sound that would resonate in the music industry through the decade.
Reflective on an industry that consumed its own over the years, Hotel California was the industry in snapshot form, the soundtrack to a place where you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave...
