I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but one would think that with the shopping list of convictions that Peter Whitmore has accumulated in his 35 years on our planet, that somewhere along the line somebody might have said that perhaps he’s not a subject for rehabilitation.
The latest abductions by Whitmore captivated the nation this past week, as police and citizens searched through the Western provinces in search of his van and the two abducted children that he had taken with him.
The outrage over his latest activity grew louder and louder this week as we learned just how many times before that Whitmore had subjected young people to his brand of misery. What seems amazing to all is the fact that he seems to have been able to travel across the nation at will. Released time and time again, with no sense of wrong doing on his part, left to do what he wished without a warning to the innocents of our land.
In a bizarre somewhat sick display of celebrity, he even infamously appeared on Canada AM once in 2000, declaring he wasn't a threat at all. As events have played out since then he was obviously more than just a liar.
Now that he’s been captured once again and faces justice one more time, one hopes that the system has finally seen the light.
This is a guy that should never be in a position to endanger children again. Never again should Canadians pick up a newspaper, hear a radio report or see a television story featuring the latest grotesque crime of Peter Whitmore, or others of his bent.
If the justice system doesn’t realize this by now, then perhaps its time that Canadians began to question our system a bit more forcefully. The likes of Peter Whitmore need not be released to Canadian streets, it's a simple observation that even the most learned judge surely must realize.
