It's going to be hockey night in the northwest, everywhere but Podunk in 2006-07!
The Central Interior Hockey League is about to expand to nine teams for the 2006-07 season and once again the buses will stop and turn around at Terrace, as far west as they’ll have to venture for another year.
The CIHL welcomes teams from the Hazeltons and Vanderhoof this year as they join the Senior Men’s AA circuit, the population boom in the league now means that they will divide up into two divisions East and West for the upcoming season.
Prince Rupert locals had expressed interest in joining the likes of Terrace, Kitimat, Smithers and Houston who play in the CIHL, but last year suggested that the economy of the city would have to improve before they would tackle such a venture. With teams as far flung as Mackenzie, Williams Lake and 100 Mile House travel would be a costly thing for any Rupert entry.
However, with the Hazeltons and Vanderhoof joining up this year, there are now more teams on this side of Prince George than on the other. The league is also attempting to balance their schedule to cut down on travel costs and match up teams that are closer to each other more often during the regular season.
The CIHL says that the Prince Rupert contingent is considering an application for a team in time for the 2007-08 season. So we'll have to wait another year before the Jim Ciccone is rockin and sockin' with CIHL Hockey!
