Look out Winnipeg, as soon as my friend Sean from Etymologica sees this one in your movie listings, there will be some serious elbows flying at the Silvercity St. Vital.
Our genial host of the wordy little website loves his crossword puzzles, so I can just imagine his glee at the release of Wordplay, Patrick Creadons tribute to the New York Times crossword puzzles and the cult of followers that try to solve them.
The film traces three types of Times followers, the famous, such as Bill Clinton, Jon Stewart, Mike Mussina of the New York Mets and the musically inclined Indigo Girls all valiantly trying to find that one word that will set them free from the purgatory of puzzle solving.
It then shifts gears and follows the puzzles editor Will Shortz, as he works with his constructors to bring the Times puzzle to creation day in and day out. The inside stuff on what it takes to create the daily constitutional for millions of followers.
Finally, the film travels along with rag tag gang of puzzle solvers as they head off on a journey to the national crossword tournament in Stanford, Connecticut. A Group I’m rather sure our fine word loving friend at Eytmologica would enjoy touring with, just for the joy of the hunt to take on the temptations from the Times.
Wordplay became a darling of the movie festival crowd over the winter and spring and has just begun its release to mainstream cinema. It had its Canadian debut on June 16th in Toronto and is scheduled for release on June 23rd in Montreal and Vancouver. Oh my, we must wonder can Winnipeg be far behind.
