Cruisin' for a Scammin'

Last weekends wildly successful Seafest celebrations seem to have been marred by some sneaky behavior by a festival participant.

It appears that the "door prize" contest, has turned into nothing more than a bit of telemarketing duplicity that has sent the town into an uproar.

Mig at menino.com does a great job of explaining the entire mess and you can follow the fall out by checking out hackingthemainframe which has the issue up on it's bulletin board.

It's a buyer beware world I guess, and if something looks too good to be true, it normally is.

Guess I had too much sun, I never actually thought about filling an entry form out at the kiosks around town and thus there's at least one telemarketer that won't be nagging me in the next few days, mind you the rest of the telemarketer world seems to have me on speed dial so I'm not feeling lonely at all!

Here is a bit of background from Friday's Daily News, a letter to the editor from Joe Gabor of the Special Events Society.

Don't share private details

To the editor,

The Seafest Committee of volunteers wishes to advise the public that a raffle was offered by an out-of-town vendor during Seafest weekend but unbeknownst to us, its intent was to telemarket for the purpose of soliciting the sale of timeshare interests.

Please heed the advise of the RCMP not to share any personal information over the teleophone or internet.

Joe Gabor
President, Prince Rupert Special Events Society
