No soap for Satan

Procter and Gamble are counting the cash and polishing their halos today, after a court decision in their favour, over nasty rumours propagated by a rival in the soap business.

A Salt Lake City judge awarded the company over 19 million dollars, after finding that four former Amway distributors were guilty of spreading malicious rumours that Procter and Gamble had ties to Satanism.

The case dates back to 1995 and featured evidence that highlighted the use of a voice mail delivery service that spread false tales to thousands of customers, about how Procter and Gamble profits were being redirected towards to satanic cults.

It has been a story that has dogged the company ever since, becoming one of those urban myths, constantly popping up and requiring them to spend a fair amount of their time in unwanted damage control, constantly trying to keep their reputation intact.

They are the world’s largest consumer products company and produce such household staples as Tide, Pringles Chips, Pampers Diapers and Folgers coffee. Products which now won’t have to carry the extra burden of possibly being tainted with Satan’s seal of approval!

The former Amway distributors are described as stunned by the verdict, which probably aptly describes their state of mind at the time to come up with such a loopy idea in the first place.
