An airport too far…

The scheduled visit of a Senate Committee to Prince Rupert, will have to be re-scheduled, after the Senators and their posse had to return to Vancouver due to mechanical problems with their plane.

If nothing else, they probably learned a bit about the rather complicated and occasionally nerve wracking travel arrangements that we in the Northwest have to deal with, as opposed to our more centralized cousins in Ottawa.

It is of course with a bit of ironical glee, that we remind our readers of the name of the Committee that was supposed to check out the containerization plans of Fairview Terminal.

The Senators and their assistants belong to the Senate's Standing Committee on Transport and Communication, which in this instance had a bit of trouble with the former and only a little bit of familiarity with the latter.

The harrowing story does however debunk the myth of the Senate of a place where members are parachuted in, they apparently travel without parachutes it seems, otherwise they might have been able to finish the journey.

The Senate Committee expected in Prince Rupert last Thursday will have to reschedule their visit after their plane into town was last week turned back due to mechanical problems.

The nine-member committee was expected to visit Prince Rupert and the new Fairview container terminal on Thursday as part of their efforts to study Canada’s ability to take advantage of container freight.

Their plane almost touched down in Prince Rupert when the pilot announced they were having trouble with the landing gear and turned back for Vancouver.

Debra Williams, spokesperson for Air Canada, said the airplane that the senators were on was sent back to Vancouver because they have a maintenance base there.

“We changed aircraft and redeparted,” she said. However, it was too late for the senate committee visit.
