Civic Pride looks for volunteers to clean up the city

With spring around the corner and the tourist season about to launch again, Civic Pride is looking for some help in keeping the city clean and removing the accumulating litter around town.

They kick off their efforts on Sunday with a community clean up at Mariner’s Park at 1 pm. The Daily News had full details on the civic clean up plan and information on a contest to keep the city clean.

Prince Rupert Civic Pride is encouraging residents to come out to Mariner’s Park at 1 p.m. this Sunday to participate in a community clean-up as well as a contest to collect a heap of litter during the next month.

The organization’s goal is for citizens to collect 500 bags of litter from around the community. As soon as they hit 500 bags, everyone who registered will be entered into a draw for a $100 gift certificate donated by Safeway.

At the community clean-up this weekend, Civic Pride organizers will be handing out specially-labeled Pitch-In bags, gloves and registration forms. For those unable to make it, these will also be available at city hall starting on Monday.

People can then choose an area around town to help keep tidy or they can choose to fill their Pitch-In bags with litter from around the community anytime during the next month. For the truly enthusiastic, they can do both.

Litter collected in Pitch-In bags during the next month can be put out with regular garbage for the city’s weekly curbside garbage pickup. The city will pick up the bags and keep track of the number collected. Hopefully, by April 15, the community will have collected a mountain of litter from the streets and the April 15 community clean-up will be an easy one.

Garbage collected by volunteers this weekend will also count toward the goal of 500 bags.
The clean-up taking place is dependent on the weather. A dump of snow would postpone it.
Anyone looking for more information or a registration form is asked to contact Barry Foxall at 624-2657 or Andy Lindenblatt at 627-4541.
