I think it was John Diefenbaker, the former Conservative Prime Minister from the fifties who once said famously “polls are for dogs”.
Turns out that Dief the Chief might have been on to something!
A story out of the States has the owner of DataUSA pleading guilty to fraud, after it was discovered that the results tabulated by her polling firm were fabricated roughly fifty per cent of the time. DataUSA was a polling firm that has conducted polls for George Bush and Senator Joe Lieberman among others, and regularly changed the data received to fulfill its quota requirements.
At times, the firm’s owner Tracy Costin instructed her staff to interview dogs and cats to get a survey filled out. Costin will be sentenced on November 30th and faces a possible term of five years in jail as well as a potential fine of up to $250,000.
Sometimes you have to take polling results with a grain of salt, now we can add some kibble to the menu as well!
