A bored teenager with a camera, or an incredibly smart PR campaign?

You Tube has its first major mystery a young damsel of the domains who posts under the moniker of lonelygirl15, pouring out her confessionals to an increasingly larger and larger audience on the YouTube service.

The Lonelygirl blurbs has become one the biggest draws on the YouTube service and her fast rising celebrity have more than a few people thinking that media manipulation is the message.

YouTube has taken off in the last six months, a former cult like portal it now is considered on the leading edge of the new media. The fascination with the web driven programming is scaring the hell out the mainstream television networks, with visions of teenagers and young adults spending hour upon hour glued to YouTube disconnected from the world of conventional and cable or satellite TV.

Some rather industrious young internet sleuths think they are on the trail of the Lonelygirl115, they set up a sting operation of sorts, trying to lure the girl out of her internet shell. A track back to a message received from the Longelygirl traced back to Creative Artists Agency, a major Hollywood talent agency. They have looked at the videos noted the movie set quality of the young gals room, her teasing tidbits of information about her life and some ominous suggestions of things to come.

This of course has the internet hopping with conspiracy theories about what she is all about, is it a clever PR campaign for an upcoming movie, a tapping of the new technology for commercial gain or just a gal with her webcam and the undivided attention of a good portion of the YouTube audience?

All may be answered on October 10th, one of the video clips featured a cookie rating session of all things, with three cookies rated as a 10 a 12 and 06. The theory is that whatever lonelygirl15 is all about will be made clear on that day. Guaranteeing a major jump in YouTube hits as the big day arrives.

Maybe things will be made obvious by then or maybe lonleygirl15 will be having the last laugh on her followers for years to come. But whatever is happening it once again shows that the more technology changes, the more likely somebody is going to take advantage of the curiosity of the residents of cyberspace. A curiosity than can move from casual interest to massive obsession in a pretty short period of time.

What will be interesting to watch is the reaction of the YouTube universe if (once) they find out they’ve been had..
