Beer and Bears don't mix

A warning for all you enthusiastic nature viewers, guzzling beer and trying to commune with nature is not the wisest thing that you could do.

A drunken Chinese migrant worker, guzzled four jugs of beer and decided that he just had to go see Gu Gu the panda at the Beijing zoo. Not content with just actually watching the panda, which was sleeping at the time, Zhang Xinyan decided to hop into the panda enclosure and get a closer look.

His arrival in the panda's den apparently startled Gu Gu, who awoke and bit Xinyan on the leg, a greeting that he didn't appreciate so Xinyan then decided to bite Gu Gu on the back, figuring the brawl was on Gu Gu then chomped down on the drunken Xinyan's other leg.

Before they got to torsos and heads, the staff at the zoo poured water on Gu Gu to move the panda away from the suddenly immobile Xinyan, though you have to wonder if they were hosing down the right object in the enclosure!

Afterwards, Xinyan held court at the hospital where he expressed wonderment at why the panda would attack. The Beijing Youth Daily quoted Zhang as saying that he had seen pandas on television and "they seemed to get along well with people."

"No one ever said they would bite people,"

Most likely because no one ever thought anyone would be stupid enough to climb in and wake them up. Just more proof that in a battle of wits between bears and humans, the humans seem to enter the fray empty handed every time.
