The folks of Crawford Texas are wondering where the good times went. The little town located closest to the George W. Bush ranch (aka the Western White House) is suffering a bit of a tourist recession, as the visitor pool dries up as the President enters his sunset years.
The town actually didn’t go overboard in the kitsch about the President, but the small souvenir stores that did start up when he took office are taking a bit of a financial hit now that he’s (ahem) not quite as popular as he once was.
The declining popularity ratings and the gathering of protestors outside the ranch seem to be providing a double whammy for the small shops that flog Crawford trinkets tied in to the famous resident.
But, in Texas style, if nothing else they’re optimistic in Crawford, with some residents proclaiming “Crawford’s name is known far and wide, and when he retires, people who are endeared to him will want to come to Crawford.”
Quite possibly true, but we wouldn’t be making any plans on any major highway improvements for the next few years; somehow we just don’t see the traffic coming their way anymore.
