Highway 16 closed as freezing rain wreaks havoc on road conditions

The Ministry of Highways has posted a road closure notice for Highway 16 on the Drive BC website for Thursday evening, as cold winds and freezing rain combine to make for slick and dangerous road conditions along the Skeena River and other portions of the highway between Terrace and Prince Rupert.
.

The Weather forecast for the Northwest for the next 24-48 hours calls for strong winds and rain, which will no doubt complicate the road conditions inland along the Skeena.

Road conditions out of Terrace are not much better as a travel advisory has been issued for the Terrace to Kitimat stretch of Highway 37, with freezing rain again the problem, travel there is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

CFTK TV posted further details on the road conditions to their website.

Further updates will be made available on the Drive BC website through the night.

Update:

December 18 10:15 am: Drive BC has changed the status of Highway 16 between Prince Rupert and Terrace as being under a travel advisory, with travel not recommended unless necessary.
.
December 18 8 am: Drive BC updated their website at 8am Friday morning advising that the highway is still closed between Terrace and Prince Rupert. CFTK TV7 News had this update as of 7:30 this morning.
