Well this could explain how a candidate that gets no votes, can remain in a costly poltical process. The good Reverend Al Sharpton, is receiving political guidance and funding from a well known Republican. A touching display of cross party co-operation.
Rev. Sharpton is making use of a wily political operative named Roger Stone, a man that helped to "clarify" all that Florida balloting silliness and helped to ensure the election of George W. Bush. In an extensive article, the Village Voice picks up the trail blazed by the New York Times and Salon.net, which have been exploring the links between Stone and Sharpton.
The Voice article paints Sharpton as a person with a grudge against the Democratic National Committee, at one point claiming that they "need to be taught a lesson - nationally." Stone apparently is hoping that Sharpton can do some sniping from within against the eventual nominee, thus his kind hearted advice on campaign matters. The article tracks a variety of times where Sharpton or his handlers have in the past aided or supported Republicans in the New York area. It reveals some of the political advice offered by Stone. It's a fascinating read, taking you into the backrooms of New York and Florida politics. The article paints the man of the people Sharpton, as more opportunist than populist.
Rev, Sharpton isn't finding much success at the ballot box, but says he plans to keep his hope alive. Say what you will about Rev. Jesse Jackson. When he ran for the Democratic nomination, you never expected a paper trail to lead to the GOP.
