Avalanche tragedy north of Smithers

An avalanche has claimed the lives of two skiers in Northwestern BC, who were skiing with a group from Last Frontier heliskiing, 230 kilometers north of Smithers.

Last Frontier issued a news release expressing its condolences to the families of those that lost their lives and focusing its attentions now on those survivors who were rescued shortly after the avalanche struck the remote mountain range.

The area where the avalanche occurred is listed in Last Frontier's publicity information as the Bell 2 Lodge, which is along ranges of Stewart - Cassiar area and offers some dramatic and stunning skiing, as can be seen from their photo pages.

Monday's tragedy took place as the Heliskiing season winds down for another year, as the warmer spring weather arrives the dangers of avalanches increases quite a bit as can be found on the Canadian Avalanche Center website, which had this advisory for the Northwest today.
