The edict has come down from high in Changyuan County, in Henan province China.
Government officials must do more than perform well on the job, now those promotions will hinge on how their character is judged.
Of particular concern to government officials are incidences of gambling, drinking and a disregard for your parents. With China becoming a more modern society, a once family oriented society is starting to become a little too "me oriented". In one province they're trying to stem the flood of disregard.
Special investigators in Changyuan County will grill relatives, friends and colleagues on each official's behaviour, including their family values and whether they have any drinking or gambling habits.
Only those with a perfect record will be promoted.
Those that misbehave we assume will be sent to their rooms without dinner.
