The Podunkian Rumour Mill (February)

Well I meant to start up this feature months ago and never got around to it.

With yesterday's confirmation that Rogers wireless is planning on setting up shop in Podunk, the time has come to get these rumours out on your screen before they come true. I first heard the Rogers rumour a couple of months ago, thought it interesting timing considering the sudden convergence of Citytel and Monarch and then promptly forgot all about it. And now here we are one of the infamous Prince Rumour rumours comes true.

Darn it, I could have looked oh so smart!

For those that aren't aware, Rogers Wireless, part of the Rogers Communication empire is planning on building two cellular towers in our fair burg, one on Mount Hays, the other on Highway 16 near the Butze Rapids outlook. It seems that many of our tourists come loaded with their cel phones while visiting Podunk, only to find that they have some problems getting them to work here in Citywest territory. Rogers, eyeing a possible increase in the areas population and industrial base figure the time has come to extend their national network to the northwest.

So there we have it, a rumour proven true. Easy as that.

And now on with the Podunkian Rumour Mill, we'll track those wild eyed fantasies of our locals as they begin to spill out around the community. From Tim Hortons' to the hackingthemainframe boards we'll keep you in the loop, (as long as we're actually in the loop ourselves). Look for it in the right hand column section of the blog!

The only areas we won't tread will be those nasty personal issue rumours that pop up from time to time, ye shall hear nary a word on those little tidbits we all might wish to hear but could send the ole podunk into the courts. You're on your own for those, we're not inclined to sully reputations, nor break up marriages.

Yes it may be a tad pedestrian at the rumour mill, but at least the lawyers won't get rich!

To start off this venture we offer up this one making the rounds of the hacking the main frame boards of late.

Canadian Navy planning on a base in Podunk!

According the rumour mill, the Canadian Armed Forces are scouting out land in Port Edward or Ridley Island for a Northern base of operations for our Navy. While it would be a welcome addition to the Northwest (not to mention the ancillary jobs that might come with it) it's a tad doubtful that we'll see this one come along. We aren't exactly over stocked with Naval Ships on the West Coast, to move some of them up to a northern base seems unlikely.

We may see more patrols of Canadian ships in our area and more port visits, but whether we become Esquimalt north remains to be seen!

Bargains at the Brick!

The hackingthemainframe boards are floating the rumour that the Brick furniture chain will be setting up shop in the old BC Hydro building. The Brick which has purchased the United Buy and Sell chain in BC, is in the process of closing some stores and rebranding others, including the one in Terrace which now apparently carries the Brick banner. With that happening and the local United shutting down, it's hard to see the chain coming here anytime soon. But it's that hopeful spirit that seems to keep Podunk going along, so we'll put it into our rumour file.

Because if its something we need here it's another furniture store.

February 24.....Quiznos is coming, Quiznos is coming!

A half page ad in the Daily Podunkian has everyone (well except the folks at Subway we suspect) salivating at the prospect of a new fast food emporium opening up in Podunk. The Quiznos chain is looking for a local franchisee, willing to provide the cash to set up shop in an already chosen site somewhere in Podunk. Podunkian's are urged to check out a website or give a call a 1-866 number to see if they wish to join the fastest growing restaurant chain in Canada!
