The Gift of Gomery

Like many Canadians, Justice John Gomery realizes that when someone moves into a new home, oh lets say an address such as 24 Sussex Drive, it's just plain neighborliness to provide them with a housewarming gift.

Gomery delivered his to Stephen Harper today, with part two of his much anticipated Report into governmental misbehavior under the watch of the Liberals.

It's a wonder table setting for the Harper government as they prepare to enter the House of Commons as the government of the day next Monday. Many of Gomery's recommendations dovetail nicely with the theme of the Harper Conservatives, as proclaimed while on the campaign trail.

Even better for the new government, Gomery has pretty well provided a set of handcuffs for the Liberal opposition. How can they sit in the Commons this year and debate against any motions put forward by the Conservatives to address the issue of government behavior.

The Liberals were the architects of the Gomery recommendations; Harper can now use them as a template for his own moves to clean up government as he said he would. Each time he presents a new motion to change the way government business is done, it will point back to the corruption of the recent Liberal era. Should the Liberals try to stall or subvert his moves, it will appear as though they are still living in denial about how off the rails they got while in government.

Gomery II, it may just be the gift that keeps on giving!
