The comedic gift of Dick Cheney

The late night talk shows are going to have a field day with the gun totin' Veep and his less than legal hunting excursion into Texas this weekend. Seems that the Vice President not only blasted his quail hunting buddy into a Texas hospital, but it turns out that they were hunting illegally without benefit of the proper documentation.

Does this mean the Vice President was poaching? That's a troubling term in Texas where they don't take kindly to folks not following their laws. As it turns out Cheney and his party received a slap on the wrist for not having their papers in order, and the VP won't be under investigation for any firearm violations, the whole matter has been signed off as just a hunting accident.

But, while the Texas officials may forgive and forget, comedians are saying thank you to the heavens for the bounty of comedic material about to unfold.

Jon Stewart's Daily show featured the Cheney shoot em up as their lead story for over half of the program, David Letterman had the Cheney hunting expedition as a running gag through the show, we're sure that Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel will likewise mine this vein of gold for days to come.

But our tribute of the day goes to the fast thinking Andy Borowitz at Newsweek magazine. Borowitz put together a web exclusive to the MSNBC site with his report of a Color coded Cheney alert system.

Modeled after the Department of Homeland Security's Terror Alert charts, the Cheney alert will advise an unsuspecting public of another attack from the gun totin' Vice President.

We're sure a grateful America sleeps better tonight.
