Podunk Below the Masthead-February 2006

FEBRUARY 28 "ACROPOLIS IN SPOTLIGHT AS MLA SLAMS MINISTER"-- The ongoing debate over Prince Rupert's extended care facility for seniors heats up in Victoria. The local MLA Gary Coons, challenges the Health Minister over the various issues related to it.

FEBRUARY 27 "PORT CONSTRUCTION IS SET TO HIT HIGH GEAR"-- A bit of good news from the Container Port project as plans to head into the first phase of construction appear ready to be launched. (see full story here)

FEBRUARY 24 "BROKEN PROMISES AND LIES' FRUSTRATE SENIORS"-- The continuing challenges of providing proper seniors care in the Northwest is examined in the Daily News.

FEBRUARY 22 "CHILDREN AND FAMILIES GET MOST FROM BUDGET"-- Budget Day in British Columbia and Gordon Campbell's government opened up its wallet a bit offering more cash to the beleaguered Children and Families ministry. The Daily has the details in a front page story.

FEBRUARY 21 "PROVINCE CHALLENGED ON HIGHWAY OF TEARS"-- Nine women have been reported missing along the Highway 16 corridor since 1990, the Daily looks at the increasing calls for more investigation and other measures to create a safer envorionment in the North.

FEBRUARY 20 "CULTURE OVERFLOWS AT HOBIYEE CELEBRATION"-- The Daily reviews the weekend celebrations around the Nisga'a new year. The celebration brought together the people of the Nisga'a Tsimshia and Haida nations.

FEBRUARY 17 "CASH HELPS PAVE WAY FOR WATERFRONT TRAIL"-- The Prince Rupert Port Corporation comes to the rescue of the millenium walkway trail. The waterfront walk from Cow Bay to Kwinitsa station has only been half completed for over two years now, the Port provided 25,000 dollars towards completion of the project.

FEBRUARY 16 "NISGA'A NEW YEAR ATTRACTS THOUSANDS"--A review of the Nisga'a new year celebrations held in the city.

FEBRUARY 15 "LIBERALS SIGNAL NEW LOOK AT HEALTH CARE"--The
B. C. Liberal governments speech from the throne offered up a change in direction for the health care system in the province. The Daily had a few of the details

FEBRUARY 14 "ROGERS SET TO TAKE ON TELUS AND CITYWEST"-- Rogers Wireless makes plans to offer service in the Northwest. The nationwide cellular service provider intends to construct a tower on Mount Hays and along Highway 16 near Butze Rapids to offer their product to locals and tourists.

February 13 "SIDES DISAGREE OVER CLASS SIZE 'REALITY"-- The Daily covers the class size discussion across the province and in Prince Rupert.

February 10 "FUTURE OF ACROPOLIS IS STILL UP IN THE AIR"-- The Daily recounts the slow movement on the replacement for Acropolis Manor, the city's long term and extended care centre for senior citizens.

February 9 "JOBS AND ENVIRONMENT SET TO BENEFIT- CULLEN"--The Daily examines the Great Bear management plan and the benefits that the local MP claims will come from it.

February 8 "GREAT BEAR PLAN QUESTIONED"-- The photo ops over the Great Bear rainforest plans have barely faded from view and already there are many questions over the idea. The Daily examines some of the players in the process.

February 7 "B. C. PROTECTING VAST TRACT OF THE 'SPIRIT BEAR' FOREST"-- Plans to preserve one third of a six hectare area of the rainforest were announced on Tuesday, the Daily had the details.

February 6 "NORTHERN FERRIES NOT SAFE ENOUGH - COONS"-- The MLA for the North Coast expresses his concern over safety issues regarding the two BC Ferries that serve the region.

February 3 "FIRMS HOPING TORIES WILL LOOK OUT TO SEA"-- A report on the hopes of the Provincial government and local offshore oil advocates for a change in policy from the Federal Conservative government over the issue of off shore oil exploration.
