It's all over but the fund raising to retire the other candidate's debts. Sen. John Kerry will be the nominee of the Democratic Party, barring any kind of scandalous pictures making their way onto the Drudge report. Kerry collected the bulk of the votes and the bulk of the delegates, as he crushed the competition this Super Tuesday.
Sen. John Edwards who was holding a small candle in the window, hoping to become the nominee made plans to extinguish his bid, Wednesday afternoon. With his expected announcement, Kerry will finally be free to concentrate his attention on the record of President Bush. The Democrats were beginning to get a little antsy, about not being able to direct all their resources into getting a message of change out. With Kerry locking up the nomination, they can start to roll out the advertising campaign to make the nominee a clear option for the American voter.
The Kerry victory has pretty well been a certainty since the first three weeks of the primary season, as he quickly placed himself far ahead of the rest of the Democratic pack. Aided by the collapse of the Howard Dean campaign, Kerry quickly found himself as the favourite in the race. Sen. Edwards making a game effort, but most likely was just performing for show position, a chance to be considered as the VP candidate on the Kerry ticket. It might be a good match, Kerry the Liberal Northerner, Edwards the southern traditionalist candidate, who might bring back some of the party that moved into the Republican camp. However, Kerry aides aren't quite ready to throw down the welcome mat for Edwards, claiming there are many qualified candidates to consider for the Democratic ticket.
With Kerry now in charge, expect the Bush machine to start to highlight his Liberal leanings from the Senate, his tax and spend days as Lt. Governor in Massachusetts, his apparent flip flops on some of the major issues in the US. And expect to see a lot of money spent on advertising. The Bush War Chest exceeds 140 million dollars, at the moment the Kerry crew have 32 million in the bank, though now that the nomination is basically his, the money should start to roll in for his upcoming campaign.
The spectator portion of the US election season is about to begin, we'll be sitting back watching each sides operatives try to paint the other sides candidate as unworthy of office, the American voter about to be bombarded with advertising to that effect. Both parties will be filling up their War Rooms with like minded apostles, ready to head out and spread the gospel. Like the time of the old time evangelists, the tents are about to go up, the people are invited to come on down.
