Hockey Night in Canada kicks off their 2006-07 season on Thursday night with a double header, one night after the NHL launches another fall, winter and spring of hockey action.
Hockey Night has big plans for the upcoming season, more games, including six triple headers during the year, coverage of the Steve Yzerman retirement night, Hockey Day in Canada from Nelson, BC, a Saturday night/Sunday morning condensed game recap and a host of other ideas to keep their market share complete and the bean counters at head office happy and counting the dollars that the game brings to the CBC treasury.
One idea that is starting to gain some attention is their Fantasy Pool, which allows use armchair GM’s to work a salary cap and put together a team of our own, all in a bid to win one of three KIA automobiles during the course of the season. It allows the fans to stay more involved in the CBC coverage and win prizes as the season goes along.
The interactive website allows you to go through your roster and add or delete players as they put you over the top of the 150 million dollar salary cap. You must pick 2 Left Wingers, 2 Centers, 2 Right Wingers, 3 D defencemen and a Goaltender, keeping one eye on their stats while the other one watches the wallet.
Do you take the big salary players and then fill the roster out with the chumps making 6 mil a year, or do you balance your roster out with 10 players all around 15 million each? The choice is yours but the future of your franchise hangs in the balance.
In hockey pool mad Canada, the CBC internet version will surely catch on pretty quick.
Everyone says that they could do a better job, now here’s your chance to go ahead and do it!
