Charges have now been laid in connection with the shooting incident that occurred back on Sept. 29 at a convenience store in the 600 block of Sixth Avenue West.

Four charges have been laid against the woman involved in the incident, including assault of a police officer, assault with a weapon, attempting to disarm a police officer and mischief.

Twenty three year old Maya Sanford from Dayton, Ohio, was arrested after being discharged from the Prince Rupert hospital on Fri., Oct. 6. That same day, she appeared before a Judicial Justice of the Peace, who remanded her to appear in Prince Rupert provincial court on Tues. Oct. 10.

At the Oct. 10 court date, Sanford was released on bail.

The independent review, which includes assistance from the “E” Division Major Crime unit under the direction of an inspector from the Vancouver Police Department, remains active and on-going.

On Sept. 29, Sanford appeared to be under the influence of a drug, and kept saying that people were out to kill her, according to local RCMP at the time.

When an officer tried to calm down the distraught woman, she allegedly picked up a pair of scissors, and attacked the officer. In the following scuffle to disarm Sanford, a shot was fired, and Sanford was later taken to hospital with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. The officer involved was an 18-year veteran.
