CN's Harrison hails Podunk

While the local candidates ready themselves for election day on Saturday, far away from Podunk rests the real economic future of the city. Canadian National Railways, CEO, E. Hunter Harrison gave an interview to a number of media outlets on Thursday, in which he predicted big things for his railway and with that big things for Prince Rupert. In short to paraphrase the old General Motors adage, what's good for CN is good for Prince Rupert!

In an article in Friday's Financial Post, Harrison said that CN (which has been dubbed North America's best railway) will experience revenue growth of five to six percent in the next year and that the railway plans to double its 1 billion dollar container business by the end of the decade.

Harrison went on to say a good portion of that growth will come from the opening of the Prince Rupert Port to container traffic in 2007, which will provide up to one third of the companies long term growth.

The CN CEO said he expected Prince Rupert to hit and hit big. A sentiment no doubt that many of our local political types will be hoping is proven true over the next few years.

We wonder if it's too late to place those last minute newspaper ads? Tying ones campaign to Harrison's train, may be the push to get them into office!
