E is for Education and an election issue in Port Edward

The upcoming municipal election in Port Edward will have a central issue of importance to all candidates and one which probably will find all on the same side of the debate.

The fight to keep the district’s only elementary school open is set to be the main talking point of the campaign, as Port Ed residents wait to hear back from education Minister Shirley Bond over the fate of their school.

The Daily News featured the story as their headline, front page item in Monday’s paper.

Dave MacDonald knows that this will be a special election in the District of Port Edward.

It will be his first one as an incumbent, his first time against an opponent and his first one without Ed Wampler.

MacDonald said he is looking forward to the new election scenario, even though he joins the fray with a heavy heart.

“When I first took over from Ed three years ago it took a few months for me not to acknowledge him as your worship” said MacDonald.

MacDonald sat on the district council with Wampler for 14 years and said that, like his competitor Christine MacKenzie, he was encouraged to run for both council and then mayor by ‘Mayor Ed’.

This will be a tough battle for both candidates – they consider themselves good friends.

MacDonald said that this election is playing with his emotions because of his internal conflict of wanting to represent the District as mayor and running against a good friend.

“This is hard on me to run against a friend and I’m sure it will be a friendly contest because Port Edward comes first,” said MacDonald.

Wampler’s shadow over the council in Port Edward might be receding, but MacDonald does not want anyone to think the former mayor won’t influence the future of his beloved district.

“Ed was a wonderful man and we still seek his advice when we spend money,” said MacDonald

He joked that Wampler still tells district council not to spend too much.

MacDonald does want people to know that he plans on running a campaign of upgrading the district’s waterworks and fighting to keep the district’s elementary school open, which he said was the biggest single issue.

The district has met with Minister for Education Shirley Bond and is waiting to hear whether or not the school will remain open.

“Port Edward without a school will not be attractive to young families who might move here,” said MacDonald.
