Blueprints, travel reviews, conference planning and Thank You’s

The city posted the minutes to last Monday’s city council meeting online this week and if nothing else, we at least now have confirmation as to how many of our current council took in the sights, the sounds and the politicking of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities in Quebec City earlier this month.

In the midst of the daily business of the recorded minutes, Mayor Pond reported that five members of City council were able to attend the national Federation of Canadian Municipalities in Quebec City this month. That bit of housekeeping had been preceded by members of the council travelling party reporting on the success and importance of the Federations conference, where the Mayor was re-elected to serve on the national board of directors.

Unfortunately the minutes don’t provide a detailed review of the meeting from each councillor, nor fill out the details for us on the success that was attained in Quebec this spring nor the vital work that those conferences do.

With no slides or video to share, it was on to other business including a string of mentions about the various community and provincial events that the councillors had taken part in this month on our behalf, a quick overview of community access and celebration, no doubt making for a sure sign that election time is fast approaching.

When they weren’t discussing their travelling and community events status, Council considered a number of items from the meeting agenda. Including plans from Kevin Leach, Russel Mather Junior and Alex Campbell to develop a Ts’msyen Memorial Totem Pole project as part of the re-development of Mariners Park. The Northern View provided some background on their plans in this week’s edition and on their website.

Another agenda issue to be explored and actually sent in motion on Monday was the initiative introduced by Michael Curnes to have Prince Rupert host a conference of the Recreation Facilities Association of BC set for 2010. Little background was provided on that plan in the actual minutes of Monday’s meeting, but the agenda list published prior to the meeting on the city website outlined a number of the requirements of the city to be host to the provinces recreation leaders.

The full report to council on the proposed conference can be found on the agenda link from the city website, it runs from pages 14 through to page 41 with everything you might ever want to know about what it takes to run a conference.

The still controversial city initiative to provide free civic centre and pool access to city employees was listed on the agenda as well, outlining the purpose and procedures of the program. You can read up on the controversial item on page 48 of the agenda

Other items of note included an update that pay parking at the Atlin Terminal parking lot is almost set to go ahead, the city has moved to a new email system, bylaw officers now have hand held units and the RCMP have moved on to a new information system called Prime.

There have apparently been inquiries made to the city regarding the Sun Wave property on Watson Island (again little in the way of details on what those inquiries may be) and Houston Pellet has been in touch with the city to make inquiries, hopefully about development and not to sell us a wood stove.

Councillor Bedard had questions about O’Brien Road and Maintenance’s handling of the highway approaches to the city and wondered about the status of the old King Ed School if its current state of disrepair is not a detriment to the neighborhood.

And finally, as if the issue has not been kicked around enough, the Feral cat controversy was raised again, this time with an announcement that city staff was now reviewing examples of Feral Cat bylaws from across the country.

All of the deliberations and travel presentation details can be found by checking out the city’s website and the official minutes of Monday’s meeting. For those with a real keen interest, the posted agenda for that meeting provides much in the way of background on what was up for consideration.
