Neufeld says it’s time to get on with it.

A trip to Norway where he seemingly found more than herring, has convinced BC’s energy minister that the time is here for development of off shore oil and gas resources.

Neufeld, who is on a tour of Europe looking at alternative and renewable energy, was particularly enthused about the safety record and monetary rewards that the Norwegian oil and gas industry has provided for that nation.

His comments were reported by the Canadian Press and posted to the Globe and Mail website.

VICTORIA — After a visit to Norway, British Columbia's energy minister says the province must get on with developing its offshore oil and gas sooner rather than later.

Richard Neufeld is touring Europe examining alternative and renewable energy.
He says Norway has safely extracted oil and riches for more than 30 years and the country is debt free with a $200-billion cash reserve fund.

Mr. Neufeld says that's a direct result of taking oil and gas from the North Sea without the extremely dirty practice of flaring and by pioneering carbon-dioxide sequestration.

Mr. Neufeld also notes Norway has tougher climate targets than even B.C., which set in law Tuesday its greenhouse gas reduction target of 33 per cent within 12 years.

Mr. Neufeld said from Dusseldorf, Germany, that it may be time to begin promoting offshore development on the B.C. coast, unless someone comes up with another way to generate a lot of money.
