The Killers-Tranquilize

Las Vegas’ favourite rock and roll sons are out with their third recording, a compilation of B sides, covers and rarities.

Taking a change of pace from the straight ahead rock of the Hot Fuss days, this is a more dark and choppy effort, taken as it is from the flips of their previous recordings and cover versions of some of the selections of artists that they pay homage to, groups such as Joy Division, Dire Straits, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition and Lou Reed.

The debut video that has been released from the CD is Tranquilize, and in its way it is very much a tribute to the genius that Reed has brought to the Rock and roll world. He is seen through the video almost an apparition like presence, as the Band works their way to where he is both visually and musically.

The opening riffs are reminiscent of U2 in their post Joshua Tree era and snippets of the video bring back memories of Queen at the height of their Bohemian Rhapsody days.

Ever present though is the tantalizing prospect of Lou Reed’s involvement, which doesn’t come across as overt, but an underlying presence, in the end putting the finishing touches on the song at the keyboard.

A CD consisting of less than mainstream music may be a risk, but Killers fans are nothing if not dedicated travellers for the band. They will eat up the offerings, what remains to be seen, is if they can grow that fan base from the converted with this latest recording.
