Stuart River returns rated as alarming

Always one of the controversial runs of the salmon season, the Stuart River run is apparently not a very promising thing this year. The run is five days late and with that in mind the Pacific Salmon Commission has raised a bit of an alarm.

Because of the situation there will be no fishing allowed along the entire river system for the early Stuart Sockeye run.

Below is the story from the opinion 250 website.

There will be no fishing allowed for early Stuart Sockeye along the entire section of the river system this year.

The Pacific Salmon Commission says the early Stuarts, which have reached low levels over recent years, are five days late in returning to the river system.

About 85,000 fish are expected to make the trek to the spawning grounds on the Stuart River in our region, a major drop from years gone by.
