PRINCE RUPERT -- The Prince Rupert Port Authority said Wednesday it has awarded a $7.5-million contract to Vancouver's Ledcor Design-Build (B.C.) Inc. to design and build two buildings linked to the construction of the port's new container terminal.

Ledcor is scheduled to begin construction this fall on a two-storey administration building and a maintenance building for the terminal. The two facilities are expected to be completed in June 2007.

The port authority has so far awarded contracts totalling nearly $90 million for the $170-million container terminal project. The port anticipates the terminal will help it become a leading gateway for trade between North America and the Asia-Pacific.

The first phase of terminal, slated to begin operating by the fall of 2007, will be able to handle 500,000 TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, per year.

A second phase will expand the container port's capacity to two million TEUs by 2010. Barry Bartlett, manager of corporate communications for the Prince Rupert Port Authority, said work on the project is going as planned.
