A Prince Rupert man has gone missing from the shores of the Skeena River.

Gerald (Gerry) O’Brien, 61, was last seen on the Skeena River sandbar halfway between Prince Rupert and Terrace.

“He’s a person who was fishing off the shore, a sports fisherman,” said Coast Guard Officer Mike Stacey, maritime search and rescue coordinator.

“We have some Coast Guard surface vessels and some Transport Canada aircraft assisting the RCMP.

“They’re searching the Skeena River basically, between the mouth of the river and the location where the person was last seen.”

The missing man was last known to be in the area on Monday afternoon about 40 miles up the Skeena, he said.

He was expected home at 8 p. m. that same day.

O’Brien is described as Caucasian, 178 centimetres (around six feet tall), 73 kilograms (160 pounds), with brown/grey hair and hazel eyes.

He is blind in one eye and wears glasses.

He has malformed fingers and a scar on his inner right leg.

When last seen, he was wearing green waders and a beige jacket.
Anyone with information is asked to call Prince Rupert RCMP – Rural section immediately at (250) 627-3131.
