Jump On Jack

Tuesday's Question Period session offered up some priceless theatre for the nation, as those that know where their CPAC channel is on the dial, could sit back and watch Jack Layton get all worked up for the cameras and express some outrage.

Layton was responding to the Gomery report released earlier in the day, which outlined the extent of scandal involved in the sponsorship scandal. A scandal that angered and saddened Layton personally, but of course did not stop him from propping up that same Liberal government over the last few months, that of course the same Liberal government that had created the mess in the first place.

Now it's a rather hard road for Layton to travel on one guesses, what with a Prime Minister that no longer really fears him and an opposition leader that spends most of his time calling him chicken. You can see why he might have had a short fuse on Tuesday, what's the use of holding a whip anymore, if no one is worried about you using it. For Layton his "threats" to bring down the government seem to be hollower and hollower with each passing day. Martin has him where he wants him now and one can't help but think that Layton knows it.

Most Canadians realize that Layton has nothing to gain by siding with the Tories and the Bloc in bringing down this government, there's little to no chance of him being able to control a Conservative agenda should they form a government in any upcoming election. And he's probably enjoyed his bit of fame the last six months in his guest appearance as the Parliament Hill power broker. Although his powers of persuasion haven't exactly set the nation on the road to a brave new world of social and political engineering. Then again there's always show business if all else falls apart.

In the meantime, surely we can be forgiven if we take his public proclamations of dismay with a grain of salt, for a guy that is so disgusted by Liberal machinations, he sure has had a funny way of putting his money where his mouth is.
