The Folks at Tim's have heard the word, and it's ready aye ready for the legendary Canadian coffee shop. In what seemed like it should have been a slam dunk, but apparently took a bit of work to pull off, Tim Horton's will open up a branch at Kandahar base, the home of Canada's contribution to the stabilization force currently engaged in Afghanistan.
After a bit of lobbying (perhaps some patriotic arm twisting as well) by the chief of Defence staff himself, the soldiers of the Afghan Task force will soon be enjoying the national fuel of the folks back home. Yes Canada is bringing the double double and the Maple dip donut to the mountains and plains of Afghanistan
The shop will apparently take the form of a trailer with take out windows, while the lifeblood of any Tim's store the donuts and coffee will arrive aboard Canadian military transports. There is also the issue of staffing the off shore location, no doubt one spot that lets say offers up a little more challenging scenario, than the bar crowd troubles of Podunk provide for the local Tim's.
One imagines that they may also have to modify the roll up the rim promotion for the Afghan outlet, in a mission that is obviously on the dangerous side, winning bar b ques and television sets might take a back seat to other more useful items. And probably the troops would trade in the Toyota's for an LAV III or an armoured G Wagon, but in the end just having the familiar smell, taste and look of your local Tim's may do more for morale than all the DVD's sent over combined.
The troops finally get what they have long wanted, a reminder of home. And Tim's will benefit from some pretty good PR. To turn down its country in its time of need would not have been the best long term strategy for a Canadian icon! About as welcome as a cold cup of coffee and a stale boston cream.
