“We know there are people out there who know something, it may be a waitress who overheard a conversation, or maybe you heard something at a drinking establishment, it may seem like nothing to you, but those little tips, little bits of information are invaluable to us.”—Sergeant Pierre Lemaitre, RCMP
The scope of the investigation into the missing women on the Highway of Tears has been expanded, as the RCMP added nine more names to the original list of nine and expanded the area of interest along Highway 16 to the east into Alberta and along Highway 97 south and north of Prince George.
The RCMP held an information session in Prince George today, which provided no further clues into the mysterious deaths and reports of missing women along Highway 16.
In the last year, a review of over 200 cases gave investigators cause to add nine more names to the list, going back in one instance 38 years. The geographical area of interest now ranges from Prince Rupert to Hinton, Alberta and south as far as Merrit.
There have been no arrests made in connection with any of the eighteen cases now in the file, nor have any suspects been identified yet. Once again, the RCMP has asked anyone with any form of information on the file to contact their nearest RCMP detachment or contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Over the last few years, fears that a serial killer was prowling the Highway 16 corridor have become the common currency of the cases, however in today’s information session the RCMP continued to neither accept or reject that possibility.
The NDP called for a $200,000 reward to be posted for information leading to arrest on the cases, others have called for a dedicated task force or judicial inquiry into the cases of the missing women. Whatever methods to find answers should be attempted, eighteen names are too many and thirty eight years is too long a period of time.

As the Sergeant pointed out in the press conference today, there are people out there who know something, hopefully today's news will jog a memory or add some new piece of information to the growing case file.
The latest developments today won’t provide much comfort for the families of the original nine and indeed the developments bring nine more families into the inner circle of those that have suffered from the Highway of Tears.
