More problems for BC Ferries

It may be a new year, but they can't seem to turn the page at BC Ferries. An incident in Nanaimo on Tuesday night has once again called into question safety procedures at the Ferry Corporation.

A pick up truck fell off the loading ramp and into the water, when the Ferry unexpectedly moved away from the dock as it was loading for the trip to Gabriola Island. Fortunately, Ferry staff were able to alert the lone passenger in the truck who escaped before the truck made its descent into the water.

Once again the Transportation Safety Board has been advised and will be commencing an investigation into the latest miscue at BC Ferries.

NANAIMO, B.C. — A ferry unexpectedly pulled away from the loading dock here Tuesday evening, sending a pickup truck tumbling into the water.

No one was hurt in the accident because ferry crew members alerted the lone man in the truck and he escaped before it fell off the ramp, BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall said.

"Thankfully there were no injuries and no persons entered the water during this incident," she said in an interview.

The ferry MV Quinsam sails between Nanaimo harbour and Gabriola Island.

BC Ferries will be conducting a full investigation into the cause of the incident, Ms. Marshall said.
"I know the Transportation Safety Board has already been notified and I believe Transport Canada as well," she added.

"We don't know what caused the incident, but rest assured we will be conducting a thorough investigation."

Ferry service on the run has been temporarily suspended and but water-taxi service is being arranged for foot passengers.
