Crime in the city, Waterfront stories

Both papers this week had details on a mini crime wave on the Prince Rupert waterfront, which saw both the rural and city detachments of the RCMP working on the file.

We take the details from this week’s edition of The Northern View

RCMP make two arrests in theft from boat cases

RCMP have made two arrests in relation to a number of theft from boat incidents in the past several months after the Rural Section and City Detachment of the Prince Rupert RCMP executed three search warrants last week.

37-year old Wade Cahill appeared in Prince Rupert Provincial Court on January 3 charged with eight counts of possession of stolen property, two counts of theft and one count of possession of a controlled substance. Charges of possession of stolen property are also being recommended against a 30-year old male resident.

A large quantity of property was recovered from the search warrants and while much of the property has been reported stolen from local boats, some of the property remains unclaimed. Reports of the thefts began during the third week of December, but police believe that many thefts have gone unreported because not all boat owners check on their boats during the winter months.

If anything was stolen from your boat during December or the first few days of January, please contact the Rural Section of the Prince Rupert RCMP at 627-3131.

Thefts from water are investigated by the Rural Section of the Prince Rupert RCMP as the water is outside of city limits, while the City Detachment gets involved because the people committing the crime are generally city residents.
