Canadians it seems like the movies, they just don’t particularly enjoy going to the movies. That at least is what we can divine from two stories in the Globe and Mail over the last couple of weeks.
The Globe website features a story about a five year decline in movie attendance with any number of excuses being provided such as a declining birth rate in Canada, as well as the demographic and ethnic reach that American movies are going for weighted heavily towards growing markets of Hispanics and African Americans. Pictures which apparently aren’t having the same box office stampede in Canada.
While the prospect of piracy is always a hot topic, the survey’s creators don’t believe that the apparent Canadian talent for finding movies on the internet has had that huge an impact on the box office.
Still, we can’t help but think that at least some of the slippage of the numbers has to come from that stream of entertainment.
So quite possibly this theatre problem is directly in relation to this home action.
