October a Sports fans vision of paradise

If you’re a sports fan then October is simply your most favourite month. If you’re married or living with a sports fan and hate sports, then October is nothing but a month long period of purgatory.

The thirty one days of the tenth month of the year, offer up a banquet of sports for the fan to indulge in. The NHL kicks off its regular season in October, with an endless schedule of games each night, double headers on the weekend and no shortage of highlight shows to bring you up to speed should you have missed something.

Major League baseball begins to play for real in October, as the National and American Leagues whittle down the list from four to two contenders, leading up to the World Series at the end of the month. October has always been baseball’s best month, visions of Reggie Jackson, the Amazing A’s, Blue Monday and many other legends of the game made during the first three weeks of the month.

The NBA training camps open up in October, as those fans of roundball watching each camp physical with increased interest. Hoping to see who has game and who has lost it in the four months of sloth over the summer.

European soccer fans are in their Glory with Soccer Saturdays a must watch for those that can wake up at 4:30 and carry through the morning, the real soccer fans subscribe to the Italian, German and other channels for the full soccer experience.

American College football goes full tilt, amateur in thought only, the big American Colleges run a program that is nothing but Professional football disguised as an element of education. Notre Dame marches on, hoping this is the year they can get to a major Bowl. The powers of Ohio State, UCLA, Alabama, Florida and host of others all intent on keeping their claim to the football factory title.

The NFL is just nicely into their regular season, the trends for teams becoming clear as each Sunday approaches. Now with increased coverage by the various networks it seems that Sunday and Monday with the occasional Thursday thrown in are main profit nights for the most successful of all the major sports.

And of course the CFL heads for the home stretch in October, starting with the ever popular Thanksgiving Day games and bringing the season to an just as we trip the calendar to November and the playoffs and Grand National Celebration the Grey Cup.

Thirty one days, of pure bliss for sports fanatics, not quite so much joy for others. Looking for the key to happiness? A two or three TV household is a happy household, trading Grey’s anatomy on one TV for Grey road uniforms on the other.

A wise sociologist would conduct a survey into the divorce rate during this one month period. We suspect that more than one marriage or relationship has reached its tipping point in this tenth month!
