Just don’t call them the Space Cadets of Cape Breton

To boldly go where no man has gone before, and we're not talking about Baddeck or Sydney Mines. That could soon be the mantra down east, if some investors from away have their way in Cape Breton.

Cape Breton is set to join the space race, with word today that the province of Nova Scotia will provide 120 hectares of land to PlanetSpace to build a massive orbital launch facility.

With dreams of rivaling NASA n the world of Space exploration, PlanetSpace is hoping to start their days of space transportation by shuttling cargo to the International Space Station on something called the Canadian Arrow.

They expect to join in the quest for space by 2009 with a launch facility set up near Sydney, a town previously known for its mines and steel plants. Designs are in the works for a 200 million dollar project, that when completed will give Canada the capability to launch its own manned space program if it wishes.

The folks behind PlanetSpace also point out to the tourism potential of such a massive undertaking. When completed they figure it could become one of the major tourist attractions on the East Coast. They use the example of the Kennedy Space Centre; which they claim out draws the land of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse in Florida.

The east coast has seen its share of rather ambitious propositions over the years, flashy sports cars, before its time oil refineries, humongous Greenhouses growing giant cucumbers and now a jump into space.

You have to admit, they think big there. You just have to hope that the latest dream fares a little better than many of those that have gone before it. It's certainly an idea that as they say, is a little out there!
